Back at the Pond, Tanya and Karissa were in the infirmary with
Jess, keeping her company, and tending to her wounds. Jess was nearly healed, but Tanya wanted her to rest a few more
days, just to be sure. It had been almost a week since Angelwing escaped and attacked Jess. Now, the human girl
was getting antsy, and was itching to get out and get back on her feet.
"I thought being benched for a while wouldn't be so bad," Jess
started. She sat up, leaned up against the back of the bed and stretched out her arms. "I get to sit back and
relax a few days." Then she turned her head to face Tanya and Karissa, looking annoyed and frustrated. "But man,
this really sucks!" she chuckled sarcastically.
"Well, it's the only way you're going to get better," Tanya
scolded.
"Yeah, but, I hate not knowing what's going on and not being
able to help," Jess protested.
Tanya looked at her sternly, standing with her hands on her
hips. "And just how would you be able to help, in your condition?"
Jess waved her off. "Oh Tanya, you're worrying too much.
I'm fine." She turned in the bed, letting her legs hang over the edge. Then she tried to stand up, but, as soon
as she did, she doubled over in pain. "Ow," the human moaned and grabbed her right side.
Tanya rushed over to help her get back onto the bed.
"Hey, take it easy Jess," she heard Karissa tell her friend.
"Just fine, huh?" Tanya sarcastically remarked, whiile keeping
her stern expression.
The cheerleading captain looked up at her and forced a slight
grin and a chuckle. "Okay, so maybe I'm not as well as I thought."
Karissa looked at her friend pitifully. "No, not even
close," she said as she shook her head in disgrace. Then, she added: "Remember, we have competition in a few weeks.
So, you need to get well enough to compete."
Jess nodded her head and sighed. "I know. It's
just that, well, I'm worried about Angelwing and the others."
Karissa sat on the edge of the be, next to Jess, and gave her
a hug. "We know, we are too. But, we'll just have to wait for the Ducks to come back."
Tanya came over too and tried to comfort the distraught girl.
"I'm sure they're alright. I mean, you know how Wildwing is."
Jess looked up at her and smiled. "Yeah, I guess you're
right." She glanced at Karissa, then back at Tanya. "Thanks you two."
Meanwhile, at the powerplant, Duke, Mallory, and Nosedive were
trying to track down Dragaunus' henchmen. The Ducks were hoping to catch them before they set off the nuclear reactors.
But they weren't having much luck finding them. They searched every room as they ran down the halls, and yet they came
up empty handed each time.
"Ugh! Where are they?!" Mallory asked aloud, sounding
down right peeved. "It's not like we were that far behind them."
Suddenly, as if on cue, Siege materialized a few feet behind
them, armed with his blaster. "Looking for someone, Ducks?" he chuckled benevolently, readying his laser. The
three ducks spun around on their heels and faced him.
"Siege!" Nosedive gasped and reached for his pucklauncher.
The other ducks followed in his suit as Mallory quickly grabbed her puck bazooka and Duke whipped out his duck saber.
"Yeah, but where are the other two?" Duke questioned, sounding
worried.
"It must be a distraction," Mallory commented. "He's
trying to stall us while Wraith and Chameleon get to the reactors."
Siege laughed again. "You guys are smarter than you look,"
he joked cruelly and pulled the trigger.
"Look out!" Mallory screamed as they all dodged the laser blast.
Nosedive growled. "How're we supposed to stop them now?!"
Duke jumped out in front of Nosedive and Mallory, readying
himself for the next attack. "You two go after Wraith and Chameleon, I'll handle this distraction."
"But-" Mallory protested as Duke interrupted her.
"Go! Somebody's gotta stop those guys!" he snapped, unintentionally.
Realizing how he sounded, he lightened up a bit. "I'll be fine. Now go!" Duke waved them off as they turned
around and ran down the hall. Then, he turned back to Siege. "Now it's just you and me, pal."
The bumbling lizard just grinned toothily at him. "Good.
I'm looking forward to frying your feathers." Without further warning, he raised his blaster and charged towards Duke.
